Grants for women founders in the UK: what exists and how to win

The honest picture

There are fewer grants reserved exclusively for women founders than most lists suggest. Many articles pad the numbers with loans, awards with no cash, or schemes that closed years ago. The larger opportunity is the open competitions that any UK business can enter, where assessors score the project, not the founder.

That matters because open competitions are where the serious money sits. A strong innovation project led by a woman founder competes on exactly the same terms as any other, and the funding available is far larger than in dedicated schemes.

Dedicated programmes worth knowing

Innovate UK runs Women in Innovation, which combines a grant with a package of coaching, mentoring and visibility for women led innovative businesses. Rounds open periodically and are competitive, so the application needs a clear innovation, a credible market and a specific plan for the funding.

Beyond that, support tends to come through regional growth hubs, university enterprise programmes and investor networks rather than cash grants. These are worth using for introductions and investor readiness, but they rarely replace a substantial grant.

Open competitions where women founders win

Innovate UK runs themed and open competitions across sectors such as AI, net zero, health and advanced manufacturing. Horizon Europe and the EIC Accelerator are open to UK companies and actively encourage applications from women led businesses.

What makes an application score

Assessors look for a genuine technical or commercial advance, evidence of demand, a team able to deliver, and a clear account of what the grant changes. A founder story is valuable context, but it cannot carry an application on its own.

The most common weakness we see is an application that describes the product rather than the innovation. Frame the work around the problem nobody has solved yet and the evidence that you can solve it.
