The challenge
Shipping loses an estimated $1.6bn a year to machinery failure and human error, and existing risk systems are reactive. HiLo, an analytics partner to more than 60 shipping companies, needed to fund Magpie, an AI platform predicting risk in real time across both conventional and new low-emission fuels.
What we did
- Framed the innovation around real-time predictive risk using proprietary fleet telemetry, not incremental analytics.
- Evidenced the data advantage from direct industry integration and early partners including Gaslog and Stolt Tankers.
- Tied the project to decarbonisation targets and quantified market impact in a $157bn maritime tech market.
The result
HiLo secured £375,000 of Innovate UK funding, accelerating Magpie's delivery by nearly two years, de-risking the build and enabling critical technical hires.
