Intervention rates are set by company size and research category. Being small is an advantage here, and it is one of the few places where SMEs are structurally favoured over large corporates.
Applying to everything wastes the scarcest resource you have. Two well matched applications will out-perform six speculative ones, which is why we only put companies forward for competitions they can genuinely win.
Under the merged R&D scheme, holding a grant no longer restricts a claim on qualifying expenditure for the same project. Most small companies leave this on the table.
Start from the funder's published scope, not your roadmap. If a competition names the challenge you already solve, that is a strong fit. If you have to stretch the language to make it work, the assessors will notice. Our UK grant directory lets you filter by sector, stage and deadline, and the application guide covers how each section is scored. Broader background on funders and award sizes is on our business grants page.
Small UK businesses can apply for innovation and R&D grants from Innovate UK, European programmes such as Eurostars and the EIC Accelerator, defence and security calls, sector challenge funds, and regional or devolved growth schemes. Innovation grants are the largest and most accessible pot for SMEs developing something genuinely new.
Usually yes. Most innovation competitions fund a percentage of eligible project costs, with small companies receiving the highest rates, often around 70 per cent for feasibility or industrial research and less for experimental development. The remainder comes from your own cash or eligible staff time already being paid.
Yes. Assessors fund the project and the team's ability to deliver it, not your turnover. Early stage companies do need to show they can cover their share of the costs and survive the payment cycle, since grants are usually paid quarterly in arrears.
With a specialist writing the bid, expect eight to fifteen hours of founder or technical lead time across the whole application. Writing it in house typically takes several full weeks of the most valuable person in the business.
