Innovate UK login and the UKRI Funding Service: a practical guide to the funder portals
Which portal you need, how to log in to Innovate UK and the UKRI Funding Service, how to add partners and submit, and how to fix the problems that stop applicants at the last minute.
Which portal do you actually need?
UK public R&D funding runs through more than one system, and much of the confusion applicants feel comes from being in the wrong one. Innovate UK business competitions are run through the Innovation Funding Service. Many research council opportunities run through the UKRI Funding Service, which is gradually replacing older research council systems. European programmes such as Horizon Europe and the EIC Accelerator use the European Commission's Funding and Tenders Portal.
The competition brief always names the system it uses. Read that first, before creating any account, because an account in one portal does not carry across to another and work written in the wrong place cannot be moved.
Logging in to Innovate UK
The Innovate UK login is the sign-in for the Innovation Funding Service. Each person needs their own account, linked to an email address they will keep for the life of the project, because the same login is used after an award for claims, reporting and monitoring.
Most login problems come from three causes: the verification email landing in spam or a filtered shared inbox, an account created under a personal address that a colleague now cannot reach, or a former employee holding the only login linked to a live project. Use a named work address, add a second team member early, and keep a record of who holds access.
Your organisation is identified by its Companies House details. Make sure the registered name and number match exactly, since mismatches slow down partner invitations and finance checks.
Using the UKRI Funding Service
The UKRI Funding Service is used for many research council and some UKRI-wide opportunities. Like the Innovation Funding Service, the application is written inside the system, section by section, with limits enforced as you type.
Where a research organisation is leading, the application usually has to pass through that organisation's research office before it reaches UKRI. That internal step has its own deadline, often several days before the funder's, and it is the single most common reason a finished application misses a round.
Adding partners without last-minute problems
In collaborative projects the lead applicant invites partners through the portal, and each partner then completes its own organisation details, finances and eligibility questions from its own account. The lead cannot complete these on a partner's behalf.
Send invitations as soon as the consortium is agreed. A partner who accepts the invitation in the final week, then discovers its finance team needs to sign off the costs, can hold up the whole submission. Agree a partner deadline well ahead of the funder's.
Submitting: what catches applicants out
Every section has to be marked complete, and every partner has to finish its own sections, before the submit button becomes available. Applicants often discover only at the end that one partner's finance table or a project growth question is still open.
Deadlines are enforced to the minute and the system can slow down as a deadline approaches. Treat the published time as the latest possible moment, not the target, and aim to submit at least a day early.
Once submitted, an application usually cannot be edited. Read the full application, ideally printed or downloaded, before pressing submit, rather than reviewing it section by section on screen.
After you submit
The portal is where you will receive the outcome, the assessor feedback and, if successful, the grant offer and project setup tasks. Keep the account active and the login details in safe hands, because the same system handles your claims throughout the project.
If you are unsuccessful, the assessor scores and comments are the most valuable thing the portal gives you. Our guide to turning assessor feedback into a resubmission explains how to use them.
Where to go next
If you are partway through an application and stuck in the portal, or unsure whether your project fits the competition at all, book a scoping call. We handle the portal mechanics, partner coordination and the writing, so your team's input stays under 12 hours.
